Where does the money go?

Starting January 1, 2009, a pseudo-escrow account has been established to provide funds for supporting Ithryn's reoccurring maintenance costs and upgrades. In reality the money goes straight into Jon's paypal account but this makes the most sense being that Ithryn's hardware is currently being hosted out of a closet at his house. The static IP address is provided by paying Jon's DSL provider (TDS.net) an additional $30/month.

Why does Ithryn Need Cash?

All of Ithryn's expenses are currently paid by whoever cares enough to write a check when something breaks. In recent past, Brian has paid for the registration of Ithryn's domain name and Jon has paid for the hosting costs and SSL certificate. The donations provided here will serve as a rainy day fund and help to reimburse Jon for hosting expenses. If we get enough reoccurring donations Ithryn could be transitioned to a climate controlled data center with real bandwidth, clean power.

Current Reoccurring Expenses

  • Hosting - $30/month
  • Electricity - $2/month (estimated)
  • Domain Names (Ithryn.net and Ithryn.com) - $15 each/year
  • SSL Certificate - $29/year

Proposed Future Upgrades

  • New Server - Ithryn is currently hosted off of a 1U VA Linux server circa 2000. The old CPU's are taxed pretty heavily by spam and virus filtering. The server is old, slow and very loud. Jon's girlfriend is a saint for having to listen to it while playing the piano in the same room. Thanks Catharine!
  • Reliable backup system. Right now we rely on a script that Brad wrote to encrypt the most critical data on Ithryn and then transfer it another computer at his house.
  • A real or semi real firewall/router. The "border router" that supplies Ithryn bandwidth is an ActionTec DSL modem/WAP. It has difficulty handling a large number of outgoing connections.
  • More bandwidth - Ithryn is currently limited to 512k uploads/1.5mbit downloads which is good enough for hosting static html, email and not much else.
  • UPS Batteries - We all die eventually.
